چکیده

Using adaptive algorithms, the design of nanoscale dielectric structures for photonic applications is explored. Widths of dielectric layers in a linear array are adjusted to match target responses of optical transmission as a function of energy. Two complementary approaches are discussed. The first approach uses adaptive local random updates and progressively adjusts individual dielectric layer widths. The second approach is based on global updating functions in which large subgroups of layers are adjusted simultaneously. Both schemes are applied to obtain specific target responses of the transmission function within selected energy windows, such as discontinuous cutoff or power-law decay filters close to a photonic band edge. These adaptive algorithms are found to be effective tools in the custom design of nanoscale photonic dielectric structures. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1614422# JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS VOLUME 94, NUMBER 9 1 NOVEMBER 2003

An Approximate Analytic Model for Evaluating the Photonic Band Structure of a 2-D Octagonal Photonic Quasicrystals

In this work, using perturbation technique we have developed an approximate analytic model for evaluating the band structure of a 2-D octagonal photonic quasicrystal (PQC). Although numerical techniques are being used for evaluating such band structures, developing a numerical model to the best of our knowledge this work is the first instance of reporting helps to understand the physical proper...

Temperature Tunability of Dielectric/ Liquid Crystal / Dielectric Photonic Crystal Structures

Recently, photonic crystals doped with liquid crystal (LC) material havegained much research interest. In this article new ternary one-dimensional photoniccrystal introduced and studied. The liquid crystal layer of 5CB and 5PCH is sandwichedby two dielectric layers. For the first time, we use four structures SiO2/UCF35/CaF2,SiO2/5CB/CaF2, NFK51/UCF35/NPSK53 and NFK51/5CB/NPSK53. The effect ofte...

Considerably Enhanced Second-Harmonic Generation in Resonant U-Shaped Nano-Structures

In this paper, we perform a detailed study of the spectral response of the gold U-shaped nano-structures for different geometrical parameters and polarizations in order to obtain significant localization factor in the wavelength 1.55 μm. The obtained near-field distribution of electric fields reveals that resonances in these nano-structures correspond to the even and odd plasmonic modes dependi...
